The Best Time of Year for a Panama City Beach Dolphin Tour

When to take a Panama City Beach dolphin tour: the dolphins live in the bay all year; summer timetables, spring break, winter departures, sunset times and hurricane season.

Updated October 2026

Any month works for the dolphins: the bottlenose dolphins of St. Andrews Bay are a resident group, in the bay all year. What changes with the season is everything around them: how many boats run, how warm the water is for snorkeling at Shell Island, and when the sun sets. For a Shell Island snorkel trip, go between late spring and early autumn; for a quieter boat, go in May or September, outside the school holidays.

Do the dolphins leave in winter?

No. NOAA Fisheries treats the dolphins of St. Andrew Bay as their own resident stock, and photo-identification surveys found them there in every season they looked: the counts ran from 199 animals in April 2016 to 315 in October 2016 (Balmer and others, 2019). A winter trip has the same dolphins to look for; it simply has fewer boats to choose from.

Winter: what actually runs

Some boats keep going into the winter on a reduced timetable. When we checked in October 2026, Island Time’s Viator calendar showed its Shell Island snorkel and dolphin cruise sailing to November 28, 2026, with one midday departure a day in November, and its spring 2027 dates were not posted yet (checked October 2026). The park ferry to Shell Island was listed through December 2026, with four crossings a day (checked October 2026), and the Shell Island Shuttle runs spring, summer and fall. On a winter visit, a 90-minute dolphin cruise without a swim stop is the realistic trip; check the operator’s calendar for your dates before you plan around it.

The same water in every season: the boats leave Grand Lagoon and the state park for the pass and Shell Island, where the crews look for the resident dolphins.

Summer and spring break

From late May to August the boats run their full timetables, with several departures a day and the sunset cruises leaving after 6 p.m. It is also when they fill, especially on weekends, so book a few days ahead for a specific time. Island Time sells the same three-hour Shell Island trip on GetYourGuide too, from $52 a person (checked October 2026); its calendar shows the departures left on your dates:

In March, spring break brings crowds to the beaches, and the City of Panama City Beach bans alcohol on the sandy Gulf beach for the month. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30; the operators cancel for weather and offer a new date or a refund under the terms on each listing.
