Shell Island Shuttle and Ferry: How to Get to Shell Island
How to get to Shell Island in Panama City Beach without a tour: the ferry from St. Andrews State Park, the Shell Island Shuttle from North Lagoon Drive, park fees, hours and what to bring.
You do not need a tour to reach Shell Island. A ferry runs across the pass from the state park on its western shore, and the Shell Island Shuttle runs from North Lagoon Drive on Grand Lagoon; both sell round-trip tickets directly, and both leave you on the island to come back later. A boat tour is a different thing: it anchors at the island for about an hour and spends the rest of its time looking for dolphins.

The two crossings
| The park ferry | The Shell Island Shuttle | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it starts | Inside St. Andrews State Park: tickets and parking at the Pier Store, then a tram to the ferry dock | Adventure at Sea, 5709 North Lagoon Drive, Panama City Beach |
| Park entry | Yes: $8 a vehicle with two to eight people, $4 with one, $2 on foot or by bike | Not stated by the operator |
| Times | Pier Store open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the tram leaves 30 minutes before your crossing | Every hour from 9 a.m. in summer, last boat out at 3 p.m.; spring and fall every hour 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday |
| Buying a ticket | At the park concession, or online through Viator and GetYourGuide | On the Shell Island Shuttle’s own site, shellislandshuttle.com |
Park fees and hours from Florida State Parks; shuttle times from the Shell Island Shuttle’s own timetable, which notes that times change with the weather and demand. Both read October 2026.
The two sources do not agree on everything. The state park’s page describes the official shuttle starting with a tram from the Pier Store inside the park, while the Shell Island Shuttle’s own site says it runs from Adventure at Sea on North Lagoon Drive. Check the departure point printed on your ticket before you drive.
The park ferry
St. Andrews State Park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset every day of the year, at 4607 State Park Lane. You pay the entrance fee at the gate, park at the Pier Store, and ride a tram to the ferry dock; the tram leaves 30 minutes before the crossing on your ticket. The same ferry is sold online as the Shell Island ferry on Viator, at $29.91 for adults, $21.35 for children 3 to 12 and $27.77 for 65 and over, with four morning and midday crossings a day in November and December 2026 (checked October 2026), and on GetYourGuide at $28 (checked October 2026). Park entry is extra either way. The same dock is where the park’s 90-minute sunset dolphin cruise leaves in the evening, $29 (checked October 2026).
Before you board, the park’s Jetty Store sells beach chairs and umbrellas and rents snorkel gear; the Jetty Store opens 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Shell Island Shuttle
The Shell Island Shuttle sells round-trip tickets on its own site, with 20% off for groups of 20 or more. Its timetable puts the crossing at only a few minutes, with departures every hour and the last boat out at 3 p.m. Pets are not allowed on the shuttle. When we read its site in October 2026 it said kayak rentals were not available.

What to bring
- Everything you need for the day. Shell Island is an undeveloped barrier island almost seven miles long. Bring water, food, sun protection and shade, and plan to carry everything back out with you.
- Shoes for the sand and shell beds, and a bag for empty shells. A shell with a live animal inside has to stay on the island.
- The return time. Ask when the last boat back leaves, and be at the landing for it.
Ferry or tour?
Take the ferry or the shuttle if you want a long beach day on the island and do not mind going without dolphins. A tour costs more and gives you less time ashore, but it includes the snorkel gear, a boat with shade and, on the big catamarans, restrooms, and it spends two hours looking for dolphins: Island Time’s Shell Island snorkel and dolphin cruise is $52.43 for adults, and Good Jibez Only’s small-boat snorkel trip is $55 (checked October 2026). The Shell Island dolphin tour page compares the boats that stop there.
Whichever way you cross, the dolphins in the pass are wild: the wild-dolphin rules ask swimmers and paddlers to keep 50 yards away, too.
